Filming for X-Men: Apocalypse doesn't begin until next spring, but that isn't stopping Fox from creating some early excitement for the next installment in the franchise with a new viral video.
The video is designed to look like a YouTube "truther" conspiracy piece, complete with poor audio and video quality, and explores the idea of Homo Sapiens Superior, also known as mutants. Various fake experts chime in on catastrophic world events while also commenting on the nature of human DNA, evolution and mutations.
Towards the end of the four-minute video things get interesting, as it shows a boy playing soccer who is among these "gifted" people. Staying true to one of the core themes of the X-Men franchise, one truther describes mutants not as "genetically gifted," but as "genetic threats." He goes on to talk about how it is the natural order of evolution for the strong to replace the weak, and in this case it is non-superpowered humans who will be going the way of the Dodo if something isn't done about the growing number of mutants in the world.
"If we are no longer indeed the most advanced species on the planet, we are no longer in control," the man says.
Apocalypse, the big bad guy looking to take over the world in the new film, is the truthers' worst nightmare. If the films stay true to his comic book character, Apocalypse is the most powerful mutant in history, capable of a wide variety of fantastic powers. He is also obsessed with the natural order of the strong replacing the weak, and you can bet in the film he won't be looking to take over planet Earth peacefully. It will of course be up to the X-Men to stop him and prove that just because one has god-like powers doesn't mean those powers have to be used for evil.
X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer was recently confirmed to be returning to direct Apocalypse, and along with the announcements news that characters like Cyclops, Storm and Jean Gray would be recast.
The video builds hype not only for the new X-Men movie (which isn't coming until May of 2016) but also for the home release of Days of Future Past on Oct. 14. An extended version of the film including scenes cut from the theatrical version is set to be released next year.
