Suicide Squad will have a PG-13 rating attached to it when it comes out in theaters in August.
The movie's official rating was released by the Motion Picture Association of America on June 7. According to the MPAA, "sequences of violence and action throughout, disturbing behavior [and] suggestive content and language" were the reasons Suicide Squad was rated as such.
Ever since Deadpool made a killing at the box office, it appeared that everyone wanted to get on the R-rated superhero movie boat, but not Suicide Squad. Its official rating then comes as no surprise as the movie's production team has always been vocal about aiming for a PG-13.
In March, producer Charles Roven said that they can give Suicide Squad quite the edge and still meet the requirements of a PG-13 movie.
Not that this means they're taking a swipe at R-rated superhero movies. According to Roven, aiming for a PG-13 simply reflects Warner Bros.' goal of reaching the widest audience possible when Suicide Squad hits the big screen, and having an R rating goes against that.
Maybe Suicide Squad can take the same route Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice did?
When Batman v Superman was released in cinemas, it also had a PG rating. However, those interested in what the movie could have been like as an R-rated one would still be able to enjoy that version when Batman v Superman's "Ultimate Edition" comes out on home video this summer.
That, or David Ayer can take advantage of a sequel to change things up. Suicide Squad is already undoubtedly skirting the edge of a PG rating (there's a lot in it that's going to surprise people, according to the director) so it shouldn't need a drastic move for the film to step into R-rating territory.
"It would be worth lobbying for," said Ayer, when asked about his thoughts on an R-rated followup.
Suicide Squad is set to hit cinemas on Aug. 5. It will star Jared Leto as The Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Adam Beach as Slipknot, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and Ben Affleck reprising his role as Batman.
