Dragon Ball Super's next story arc will see the return of a fan-favorite character, but it's not going to be the happy reunion for which fans might have hoped. It appears that the future is once again in peril, and Trunks has traveled back in time in order to warn Goku and friends about it.
A new trailer previewing the June 12 episode "SOS From the Future! A New Black Enemy Reveals Himself!" has appeared online, and it gives fans a glimpse at the new arc's mysterious villain. It certainly seems like Trunks has his work cut out for him. Clips in the trailer show ruined cities and a Trunks that is struggling to hold his own against the powerful new enemy.
Who exactly is the character known as Black? It's still a mystery, but there are a number of clues. For starters, series creator Akira Toriyama hinted that the character's full name is Goku Black, while also confirming that the Gods of Destruction and the Supreme Kai will be involved in the new arc. Then came the arrival of a poster for the new story arc, one that appears to show a smirking Goku that looks a little different from the happy, carefree character fans have come to love. Is Goku becoming evil?
It might be possible. Future Trunks will be fleeing to the past via a time machine to seek help from Goku and Vegeta. How that factors into an "evil Goku" storyline remains to be seen. Or Goku might not be evil at all. The villain glimpsed in the trailer is shrouded in flame and appears to be some kind of monster rather than a person, but appearances can be deceiving.
Regardless of what the series has in store, fans have never been happier to have Dragon Ball back. The franchise is enjoying a bit of a renaissance as of late, with two feature films having recently been released and the new show building upon many of the elements that old school Dragon Ball Z fans have come to know and love. New video games have also been coming fast and frequently. The home console Dragon Ball Xenoverse released last year, along with Dragon Ball Z Extreme Butoden for Nintendo 3DS. Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is set to release later this year.
It's unclear if Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 will include storylines or characters from Dragon Ball Super, but it definitely seems like a possibility.
