Lilith, the game developer behind Allison Road, recently announced in a tweet that the much expected title is off the books.
The gaming company offered no details on why it's axing the project, but promised to issue an explanatory statement soon.
The upcoming horror game was seen by many as the spiritual successor of Silent Hills.
Silent Hills was another much anticipated horror title that got the boot in 2015, following the conflict between Hideo Kojima and publisher Konami. Kojima, who was the brains behind the Metal Gear Solid series, left the company with a bang, and Silent Hills was one of the first victims of the divorce.
However, fans quickly turned their attention to Lilith's Allison Road horror title, which seemed to have taken more than a leaf out of Silent Hills' book.
Silent Hills had a teaser demo dubbed P.T. before it got shelved, and Allison Road drew heavy inspiration from it.
Allison Road is the story of an anonymous protagonist who wakes up inside an unfamiliar house. The player must uncover clues about why he or she is in that place, and exploring the eerie house is part of the tension building process. As you would expect, dark terrors are lurking in unexpected places around the dwelling, and the gamers have to deal with them in their quest for figuring out the storyline.
The game stirred great hype as rumors permeated that the gaming company was looking into fitting it with PlayStation VR support. This would have boosted the immersive nature of the game, not to mention multiplying the scare-factor tenfold. A Kickstarter campaign for Allison Road was also initiated in September 2015 with the purpose of bringing the game to PC the following year. However, Lilith booted the Kickstarter campaign as Team17 joined the creative team.
"Working with Team17 ... will give us the resources, support and experience that only a 25 year old studio can give," the Kickstarted page reads.
Lilith also pointed out that in the new companionship, the game's development can go "unhindered creatively."
We will keep you posted as soon as we have details about the unfortunate canceling of Allison Road.
