The Oculus Rift-exclusive video game Edge of Nowhere is getting released on June 6.
Insomniac Games, the game developer, announced Edge of Nowhere during the 2015 E3. The game developer will release three Oculus Rift-exclusive games: Feral Rites, The Unspoken and Edge of Nowhere. Edge of Nowhere will be the first to hit the shelves.
Gamers play as Victor Howard searching for his fiancé, Ava Thorne, who is a part of a lost expedition to Antarctica.
"His [Howard's] rescue mission takes a sudden turn as he ventures deeper into a dark monstrous world where reality warps and twists around him. Desperate to find the one he loves, Victor must encounter disturbing creatures and climb sheer cliff walls as he descends further into madness," says Insomniac Games.
Insomniac Games has been creating hype about the action-adventure third-person game via Twitter. The game developer confirmed the June 6 launch date for Edge of Nowhere in April this year and since then, Insomniac Games has been tweeting regularly about the virtual reality (VR) game for Oculus Rift.
Many gamers play video games for long periods of time but VR games may not be suitable for such duration because the first-person perspective has a tendency to induce nausea.
"From my experience with demo-ing the [Oculus Rift] DK1 and DK2 to people, the problem is that they feel slightly nauseous, but think it will go away quickly afterward and therefore continue the experience a little longer. Only after taking the headset off, they realize they feel sick for about 2 hours afterward," says a redditor.
The estimated play time of Edge of Nowhere is not known, but the third-person aspect of the game is meant to reduce nausea while playing on the Oculus Rift. Reports suggest that people who have played the game have found camerawork to be slow to minimize nausea. However, some gamers have also reported to have felt nauseous while playing Edge of Nowhere.
The VR experience could be great for gamers but they are recommended to remove the headset at the first sign of discomfort. It remains to be seen if game developers can find a way to reduce nausea while playing VR games.
The other two Oculus platform-exclusive games developed by Insomniac Games will be released toward the end of this year. An exact release date for Feral Rites and The Unspoken remains unknown.
