Mario has done wonders for Nintendo ever since he appeared in Donkey Kong Junior in the arcades in 1982 (technically his first appearance in a game was one year prior, in Donkey Kong, but he was merely known as Jumpman then). Part of his long-lasting appeal isn't just the platforming action of his main series, but how easily he lends himself to other genres.
One such genre is racing, which immediately brings to mind the long-running racing series Mario Kart. Making its debut as Super Mario Kart in 1992 on the SNES, the series truly took off after Mario Kart 64 and has been going on strong since then, with the most recent iteration, Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U, being no different.
Mario Kart 8 itself is easily one of the best, if not the best entry in the series, incorporating brand-new items like the boomerang and new mechanics like anti-gravity. Yes, there are some faults with the game - blue shells are still as annoying as ever and the battle mode is still weak - but those negatives are far outweighed by the positives.
One of these was a substantial DLC campaign that not only expanded upon the game's base content, but also came at a highly affordable price.
Well, fans who were pleased with the original DLC will be glad to know that Mario Kart 8 may be getting even more of it, if a tweet from Nintendo UK is to be perceived that way. Using its official twitter account, Nintendo UK posted a tweet with a caption reading, "Good things come to those who wait," while using the Mario Kart 8 hashtag.
Considering that the photo is of Toad and Wario getting smacked by a train because they failed to wait for it to pass, then yes, the advice "good things come to those who wait" is certainly good. However, the tweet takes on a potentially greater meaning when we realize just what this is a picture of.
This photo is from Mario Kart 64's Kalimari Desert track and while it did make a return in MK7, it is noticeably absent in MK8. Why post a picture from an old game while using a hashtag referring to a new one? The conclusion many have reached is that Nintendo has new DLC coming and Kalimari Desert will be one of the old tracks to make a return.
If true, this DLC will mark the third to arrive for Mario Kart 8. The first two were based on Animal Crossing and The Legend of Zelda. Will this rumored third DLC pack have a theme based on a popular Nintendo franchise or simply be a blast from the past and feature an assortment of old Mario Kart tracks?
Unfortunately, Nintendo has yet to officially confirm anything, so we'll just have to wait and see. It's possible they'll surprise us yet again and announce it during E3.
