Domain '.Game' Now Up For Grabs: Here's The Deal

The gaming community has some exciting news headed their way — the web address for gaming titles can now ditch the boring .com for .game instead!

On May 26, popular domain name registration service company Uniregistry Corp. revealed that it had successfully launched the extension of the domain ".game" to the Internet. The domain ".game" — as the name suggests — is targeted at the community of gamers.

"Games thrill, connect, and inspire audiences around the world. .game is an all-new Internet extension built for game enthusiasts," notes the company.

One can now register a gaming site with the domain ".game" to bring clarity to any visitor that the content on the website pertains to video games. After introducing an early access window last week, Uniregistry has now finally made the latest ".game" domain available to everyone.

For those unfamiliar with the matter, in 2015, the company had disclosed that it had attained the rights to the ".game" domain. Apart from a select few who could take advantage of the early access period, the ".game" domain has been off limits for anyone looking to lay a claim on the same — until now.

"We're excited to bring .game to the internet, and we are especially pleased to see the early adoption of the name by the world's leading gaming companies. The broad-based support of .game by the companies that make the world's most exciting and immersive form of entertainment is deeply gratifying," said Frank Schilling, managing director of Uniregistry.

Uniregistry also revealed that organizations that develop platforms intended for the gaming industry have also snapped up ".game" names. For instance, Apple has already bought AppleWatch.game, iPad.game and AppleTV.game. Microsoft and Sony Interactive too have predictably registered Xbox.game and PlayStation.game, respectively.

Not just companies, even individuals in the gaming sector have snapped up domain names on the very first day. For instance, Georgia Van Cuylenberg, who is a voice actor for several popular gaming franchises such as Star Wars, Payday 2 and Final Fantasy, grabbed the domain name Voiceover.game.

If you are keen on searching for your very own ".game" domain name, head to get.game.

You can not only search for the ".game" domain names that have already been claimed but also check if the one you have in mind hasn't already been grabbed by someone else. The cost of acquiring a ".game" domain name can vary, and the average rate is around $320 for a year.
