Things are about to get a lot more interesting for Jesse Custer on Preacher.
Please note that the following contains spoilers for the first episode of the series.
At the end of Preacher's pilot episode, Jesse finally gets his strange powers (although the TV show is a bit more mysterious about where these powers come from than the comic book is). Suddenly, the minister of Annville can tell people exactly what to do and they will obey. As we've already seen, that kind of power is dangerous, but Jesse sincerely wants to change his life and become a good man.
The only question is, can he?
A new promo for next week's episode shows Jesse struggling with this, while Tulip continues to remind him that he's a bad man through and through.
From the first episode, it's evident that the series plans on taking a departure from the comic books: in the original story, the powers granted to Jesse result in his entire congregation dying. On the TV show, though, it looks like Jesse will use those powers to "help" his people, although it's probably not the kind of help they want or even need. But even with the changes from the original story, Preacher got a lot of praise, both from critical reviews and social media users.
Even those in the comic book industry enjoyed the adaptation:
And yes, unfortunately, that last tweet is right: it's two more agonizing weeks until the next episode. Considering the long road it took to finally get a live-action adaptation of the cult classic comic book series, a two-week wait won't feel that long.
Preacher returns to AMC on June 6 at 9 p.m. EDT.
