A new trailer for AMC's Preacher, based on the comic book series of the same name, shows a motley crew of characters that will walk "both sides of the line."
The trailer features not just the title character, Jesse Custer, aka Preacher, but also showcases a few more faces, including Tulip O'Hare, Arseface and Cassidy.
Even more telling, though, is the end of the trailer, which almost seems a shot-by-shot copy of one of the first trailers for Netflix's Jessica Jones. And this is all set to Wanda Jackson's "Both Sides of the Line."
Nerdist Chris Hardwick posted the trailer and also announced that he would host a talk show based on the series that will air after the premiere and season finale episodes on AMC.
The Preacher series is a labor of love for its executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. The project took nearly a decade to finally get off the ground, but it finally picked up speed after the two managed to get the rights to adapt the comic book. Both also appreciated how well AMC adapted The Walking Dead, and how comic book fans reacted to that, so the network seemed like the natural choice for Preacher.
"What they did with TWD was very exciting to us; the fact that they took a fringe comic book with very passionate hardcore fans and then turned it into one of the biggest shows on television," Rogen said. "They seemed like incredible partners to work with and Sam [Catlin] had a great relationship with them from Breaking Bad."
Preacher tells the story of Jesse Custer, a preacher from West Texas who gets possessed by a supernatural creature called Genesis. This half-angel and half-demon thing ends up destroying Custer's church, as well as its congregation. Custer then begins traveling across the United States to search for God, who has since gone missing. His travels teach him more about his newfound powers, which gives him the voice to command people.
The TV series will maintain the Western feel of the comic book, but fans can expect some small changes: a few new characters will appear in the series and there will be more emphasis on who Jesse is before he comes into his powers.
Preacher premieres on May 22 at 10 p.m. EDT on AMC.
