One benefit of having a film set in the 1980s are all the numerous pop culture references filmmakers and marketers can create.
The men and women behind the 1980s set X-Men: Apocalypse haven't wasted any time in that department. We've already gotten a retro arcade reference and glimpses of a Dazzler album, and now, we have a whole lineup of parody album covers starring the cast of the upcoming film.
The images come via the official X-Men Movies Facebook page, where album covers featuring Beast, Nightcrawler, Cyclops, Jean Grey and Quicksilver have all made an appearance. Beast's album parodies Duran Duran's iconic Hungry Like The Wolf cover art, while Nightcrawler's is a homage to David Bowie. Quicksilver goes all Flock of Seagulls, while Cyclops, aka Scott Summers, wears his optic visor at night in a tribute to Corey Hart's Sunglasses at Night. Jean Grey's album parody is that of Culture Club's Colour by Numbers.
Each cover is pretty spot-on, and it's fun to see the movie embrace its '80s setting. How many pop culture references will make their way into the actual film, however, is another story entirely. Bryan Singer's latest X-Men film will take viewers back to the 1980s as a young team of X-Men look to stop the god-like mutant Apocalypse from destroying all of humanity. From what we've seen so far, the movie looks pretty bleak and serious, so who knows if there will be time for any '80s homages like these albums in the actual film. You can check out the parody album covers below.
In other X-Men news, fans recently got a glimpse at what the film's version of Apocalypse himself could have possibly looked like had the movie hired another creator for the job. Reviews for the movie have also come in. So far, critics don't seem to be enjoying the movie as much as First Class or Days of Futures Past, with X-Men: Apocalypse currently sitting at 52 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
X-Men: Apocalypse is in theaters May 27.
