Motorola rolled out a new series of handsets yesterday, and it was slightly surprising to see not two, but three Moto G4 models lining up for customers to choose from.
The three variants are the Moto G4 Plus, the Moto G4 and the Moto G4 Play, and all are expected to reach the United States soon. The company states that the smartphones should hit the shelves during the middle of the summer. Previous rumors hinted at an upcoming release for Moto Z during the same period, so Motorola could be timing its devices together in July.
Users with an eye for aesthetics will want to see what the new G series offers in terms of Moto Maker choices. Luckily for them, there are a number of back sides to select from.
Both the Moto G4 and the Moto G4 Plus share a wide number of possible "backs," but it is not clear whether or not the Plus will have additional materials (such as leather) to give it a more high-end feeling.
Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus were the first to hit the global markets. The two phones were announced to appear in Brazil on May 17, with the Moto G4 Plus being expected to land the same day in India. The OEM announced that multiple countries across North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Latin America will also get their share of the new Moto G series sometime soon. Take a look at the official specs of the new line of devices.
Moto G Play, on the other hand, will take a bit before reaching its customers. Motorola says the third model in the 2016 G series will be available "later this summer."
It is worthy of mention that Motorola wants to bring the Moto G4 Play in the United States. In 2015, the OEM renounced the idea of pushing out the Moto X Play and focused on the Verizon-carried Droid Maxx 2. It is an interesting change of strategy from the phone manufacturer, which aims to tap into a rather price-conscious market demographic that would choose the G Play ahead of other devices.
No official information on the U.S. pricing of the devices exists, but there is a good chance Moto G4 Play will come and switch places with the Moto E, the previously affordable series from the OEM.
