Microsoft Freeing Up 1 Million Xbox Live Gamertags: Here's What You Need To Know

Gamers everywhere, now's your chance to get the Xbox Live Gamertag you've always wanted, as Microsoft is clearing up the database of about 1 million dormant names.

According to Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, the Gamertags that are set to be up for grabs are "accounts that never migrated to Xbox 360," and because of that, they are no longer being used.

Going straight to the juicy details, Xbox Live Gold members who have accumulated at least one year's worth of Gold status since 2002 can nab one starting on May 18 at 2:00 p.m. ET or 11:00 a.m. PT.

To keep things fair for everyone across countries, Microsoft is not releasing these Gamertags all at once but "over a period of 24 hours" instead.

As expected, the company won't give out the names that will become available, but Major Nelson did provide a list of the categories where they belong to, from proper names, pop culture references, types of food, geography and travel to science and technology, math and numbers, animals and "some of the greatest inventions of all time."

Users can get ahold of one via the Web at the Xbox website, the Windows 10 Xbox App or the Xbox One itself. Unfortunately, the Xbox 360 isn't getting the same treatment, but gamers on that console can still get one from the aforementioned website or app.

To check for eligibility, just head on over to your Profile on the Xbox One or the Xbox App, as it'll display how long you've been a part of the Gold program collectively.

Now it should be noted that only the first try is free of charge, and needless to say, there will be a fee after that.

Long story short, save the date and get ready to get the Xbox Live Gamertag of your choice. Also, don't forget to let us know in the comments section below whether or not you're joining in the action.
