Activision is awfully happy with the sales of Destiny. After taking top honors for most expensive game ever and biggest-ever launch of a new game, the company is now boasting that Destiny has become the best-selling video game launch of all time for a new IP.
Basically, Destiny is everything ever.
The game raked in more than $325 million worldwide in its first five days on the market, which not only puts it above other video game launches but far above the first five days of most blockbuster films, too. Bungie says that players logged over 100 million hours of online play in that same amount of time, and took part in 137 million in-game missions and other activities.
Bungie must have servers made of solid rock, because despite those huge numbers, no mass outtages were reported during the game's first week. That's impressive.
"Millions of gamers are having a great time playing Destiny and can't put down their controllers," said Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg. "And this is just the beginning. Destiny is a platform that will grow and evolve and we will continue to work closely with our partners at Bungie to bring a long line of new experiences and content to life in the game."
Reviewers (including our own Cameron Koch) consistently agree that Destiny is a flawed but addicting experience, with enough good stuff to keep players coming back for more — even though the game consists mainly of grinding away at reaching ever-higher character levels.
Don't bother fighting it, though. You will succumb to its thrall. Resistance is... well, you know.
