Super Mario Is Coming To The World Of 'Minecraft' In New Mash-Up Pack For The Wii U

Minecraft: Wii U is about to get a major update next week that will bring Super Mario into the the game.

Nintendo announced that on May 17 it will release the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack as a free update for the Wii U edition of Minecraft. The pack will include Super Mario-themed items, such as 40 various character skins including Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Wario, Bowser, and all seven Koopalings, textures, Mario building blocks and 15 songs from Super Mario 64.

A new pre-made Mario world will also be included, and feature all the new content so that players can explore all that this pack has to offer.

The pack truly brings Super Mario into the world of Minecraft with its pixelated and blocky style. Players can build large statues of their favorite characters and replicas of levels from the game. They will have to defend against block versions of Hammer Bros. and Dry Bones just like they do Creepers and Zombies.

"Both the Super Mario franchise and Minecraft embrace the magic of exploration and discovery," Steve Singer, Nintendo of America's vice president of publisher and developer relations said in a press release. "Players will have a great time adventuring and creating in this free game update that embraces the unique and memorable elements of both franchises."

The Super Mario update only was announced for the Wii U, so it looks like PlayStation and Xbox fans will miss out on this one for now.

Minecraft: Wii U Edition previously launched for Nintendo's console last December as a downloadable game. At that time, the company said it has plans to release content for Nintendo fans in the future. It only makes sense Nintendo would want to first bring fans this Super Mario and Minecraft mash-up. To do so, Nintendo has teamed up with Mojang and Microsoft.

Microsoft, which owns Minecraft and its developer, previously released The Simpsons skin pack for Minecraft for Xbox 360 and Xbox One, as well as Halo skins.

Nintendo also announced that the retail disc version of Minecraft: Wii U Edition will launch on June 17. It will cost $29.99, and have the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack included as well.
