Embattled vehicle manufacturer General Motors issued a "stop delivery" order on one of its best-selling cars of the year, the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette.
GM issued the order to car dealers all over the country, just as shipments of the 2015 Corvette were delayed.
The "stop delivery" order and the shipment delays are all connected to two specific issues that GM is looking to address in the 2015 Corvette, specifically in the brakes and airbags of the vehicles.
There is no public recall order issued for the vehicle, according to GM. However, the company did not specify if a recall order will not be necessary in the future.
There is usually a gap of several days from the discovery of a vehicular problem and a recall order that is made through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
GM also did not officially disclose how many 2015 Corvettes that are affected by the two issues have been sold to customers.
However, a spokesman for GM said that a few of the 2015 Corvettes that were already shipped to customers may be affected by either one of the two issues.
Alan Adler, a spokesman for GM, said that the two issues affecting the 2015 Corvette have not been linked to any reported injuries or crashes.
The first issue involves the brakes of the vehicle. An estimated 800 units of the 2015 Corvette that are currently at car dealer companies may only come with one of the required two brake cables for rear parking installed and engaged. GM said that the defect can be repaired by authorized technicians.
The second issue involves the airbags of the vehicle. An estimated 2,000 units of the 2015 Corvette are being held at the production plant of GM located in Bowling Green, Kentucky after the discovery that a defective part may have been utilized in the attachment of the air bag to the car's steering wheel.
The "stop delivery" order and shipment delays will unfortunately dampen the great performance of the 2015 Corvette in the market so far.
The 2015 version of the iconic sports car has received excellent reviews from several publications, leading to sales in the United States reaching 23,500 units by August.
The sales figure of the 2014 Corvette represents a 235 percent increase compared to sales from the same period in the previous year, according to Autodata Corp.
GM has so far issued 60 recall orders this year, increasing the total number of vehicles recalled in 2014 to 30 million.
