'Borderlands 3' Is Officially Gearbox's Next Game, And It Might Feature The Son Of A Fan Favorite Character

It's official: Borderlands 3 will be Gearbox Software's next game. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford confirmed as much himself during a panel at PAX East over the weekend (via Eurogamer), saying production will start on the game in earnest once Battleborn is on store shelves and all of its DLC is finished.

He goes on to say that it's "obviously not a secret" that a new Borderlands game would be coming. After all, it's Gearbox's most successful franchise ever. It's only natural that a third game (well, technically, the fourth game if you count the 2K Australia-developed Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel) would be made sooner rather than later. That doesn't necessarily mean, however, that the game will be called Borderlands 3 when it does arrive.

"We don't even know if we're going to call it that," Pitchford said during the panel. "We could call it Borderlands 4 for all we know."

While details about the new game are few and far between, we now know that Gearbox's Mikey Neumann will be writing the sequel, regardless of what it ultimately ends up being called. He said during the panel that he has brainstormed the idea for a character that could make his way into the game. According to Neumann, the character is the son of fan favorite Scooter and goes by the name Scooper.

"I did this whole Scooter thing, then I pitch-shifted it up like seven semitones so it sounds like a chipmunk and it was the funniest thing I'd ever heard," Neumann said.

It certainly sounds like the idea is in the Borderlands wheel-house, but Neumann goes on to say that nothing is official yet. What does seem set in stone is that Battleborn's DLC will feature plenty of Borderlands Easter eggs, including some from the next installment of the franchise.

There's already a lot of Borderlands Easter eggs in Battleborn," Pitchford said. "But they're all from previous Borderlands games. So what if we put Easter eggs for future stuff in the DLC?"

Expect more Borderlands 3 details in the months ahead.
