Nobody likes going back to school. Even if you haven't been in school for years, you remember the feeling of having to leave the carefree days of summer behind and return to waking up early, listening to teachers lecture you and the constant promise of homework when you return home.
But for some people, school isn't just a place that isn't much fun most of the time. It can literally be torture if you're bullied or made fun of at school, day in and day out.
And while bullying is a complex and topical issue that won't be eradicated anytime soon, it always helps to have people in your life you can turn to for support when things get tough. A new commercial going viral proves just that.
German home improvement chain Hornbach recently released a back-to-school commercial that has gotten the attention of the Internet. With more than 2.2 million views on YouTube at the time of this writing, the spot features a Gothic teenage girl, dressed in black from head to toe. If you know anything about how high school works at all, you probably know that students don't take too kindly when others act or look different from the status quo.
So after getting dropped off at school by her dad in the morning, this young woman trudges through the hallways, gym class and the school courtyard, all the while avoiding nasty glares, getting excluded from activities and even having a frog thrown on her desk.
But there's a wonderful surprise waiting for her at home that shows that no matter what she experiences at school, she'll always have a loving support system waiting for her at home. Although the campaign's tagline, "Sag es mit Deinem Projekt," is in German, you don't need to know its English translation of "Say it with your project" to understand the message of this ad loud and clear.
Who knew an ad about home improvement could be so emotional?
