Get A Sneak Peek At Themyscira From The 'Wonder Woman' Movie

Now that filming for Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot, is underway, footage from the production has slowly begun to surface on the Internet.

The latest shows off Themyscira, also known as Paradise Island, the home of the Amazons, and the place where Wonder Woman grew up as the daughter of the Queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta.

This video, shot in Italy, shows Diana's fellow Amazonians, both young and old, wandering the streets of the mythical island as they go about their daily lives, presumably before the crash of Steve Trevor's plane.

In this footage, Themyscira seems very Greek, suggesting that this is the tone chosen by the film's location scouts and director. It doesn't point out, though, how Diana's origin story will actually play out. The comics started with Diana as a baby created from clay, but in the New 52, Diana was actually the daughter of Hippolyta and the Greek god Zeus. There's no word yet on which origin story — if either — the film plans on going with.

However, the movie will cover how Diana became Wonder Woman.

"The Wonder Woman you're going to see in Batman v Superman is a very different Wonder Woman than you will see in the standalone movie," Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot said to the L.A. Times. "The Wonder Woman that you see in Batman v Superman is a woman who has been around, and she's very experienced. She understands a lot about man. Whereas in the standalone movie we are telling the grown-up story, Diana becoming Wonder Woman, and this was a story that was never told before. When she starts this journey, she's very pure. She's more naive, she's this young idealist who does not really understand the complexities of life and the complexities of men."

A lot is riding on DC's live-action depiction of Wonder Woman, the first since the 1970s Linda Carter television series. When viewers went to see Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice last month, most admitted they were most excited about seeing her depicted in a live-action film. Although many fans and critics ultimately panned BvS, most still liked Gadot as Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman hits theaters on June 23, 2017.
