It was only a matter of time before Counter-Strike 1.6 landed on Android, and it has finally come.
The developer behind the unofficial port is Alibek Omarev, uploading a video demonstration on YouTube and the APK files for the game on GitHub.
Performance-wise, the game does slow down a lot on the mobile, and the screen is chock-full of touch-screen controls. In other words, it's a bit far from playable, but at any rate, it demonstrates the possibilities of what people with the know-how can do on an Android device nowadays.
One way to really play it on a handset is to connect a Bluetooth gamepad, keyboard or even perhaps a lipstick controller in the near future, but that won't really work until the game starts running smoothly on the smartphone.
With that said, the developer does point out that the controls are fully customizable, noting that "skills in programming" aren't necessary to modify them.
For those who are interested in taking it for a spin, the required files are available at GitHub, but it does involve a lot more than just downloading an installer and going through a setup wizard.
Aside from the APK files, users will need a Steam account with Counter-Strike 1.6 downloaded and installed on a computer. They will then have to install other software, make some modifications here and there, delete some stuff and copy the Steam installation to the SDCard folder on their smartphones.
It's also worth mentioning that this is not a stream or anything else along those lines. This is the full game running on Android.
