Card-driven strategy game Twilight Struggle is now available for PC and Mac via Steam.
Twilight Struggle is one of the most-popular board games and now it has gone digital. The two-player game is based around the Cold War and gamers have to play as the U.S. or USSR. The objective of the game is to obtain global dominance. Players score points based on the territories they have captured.
On Thursday, Steam announced that the game is finally available for PC and Mac.
"The wait is finally over. GMT's #1 rated War Game is finally available to own through Steam for PC and Mac!" says Steam. "Twilight Struggle is a challenging strategy game of medium complexity that presents new and different challenges with every game session. The game map is a world map of the period, whereon players move units and exert influence in attempts to gain allies and control for their superpower."
The in-game events include Cuban Missile Crisis, Arab-Israeli conflicts of 1948 and 1967, Vietnam and the U.S. peace movement and more.
The actual price of Twilight Struggle is $14.99 but currently Steam is offering a discount of 20 percent, which reduces the price of the game to $11.99. Gamers who want to take advantage of the discount should hurry as it is a special promotion offer which ends April 20.
Translating Twilight Struggle from a board game to a digital one was not an easy task. GMT Games, the print publisher of Twilight Struggle, says that it planned digital conversion of the game in 2014 but had to drop the project due to high complexity.
The digital version of the game has been now successfully developed by Playdek. The developer started a Kickstarter project in 2014 and wanted to raise $50,000. However, the campaign raised more than $391,000 within a month.
The digital version of Twilight Struggle is similar to the original tabletop version. The game has a sleek user interface and transitions between turns.
Being a two-player game, players need to find another person to play with. The game is not simple for everyone to understand and new players have to read through dozens of pages of strategy and rules. It can get challenging to find a person who knows the game.
However, the multiplayer component of the digital version of Twilight Struggle addresses this issue.
The game developers are also working on the iOS and Android version of the game. With the PC and Mac version out, gamers should expect the game developer to release the iOS and Android version sooner than later.
