Although The CW's The Flash is on hiatus for several weeks, once the show returns, chaos will break loose in Central City as Barry Allen and company finally learn the truth behind the man who wears the mask of Zoom.
A new trailer promoting the next episode of The Flash reiterates what the team previously learned: that Zoom possesses the face of Jay Garrick.
However, it seems that he is actually not Jay, but someone else: Hunter Zoloman.
The trailer dives into Zoom's origin story, unveiling some of the truth behind the villain, perhaps helping the team in figuring out just how to stop him from destroying multiple Earths.
In the comic books, Zoom was always Hunter, but was mostly associated with Wally West, the third Flash. Hunter had multiple family issues and eventually learned that his father was a serial killer as a young adult (and this gets a mention in the trailer). This prompted him to study psychology and criminology, which led to a career with the FBI. After his girlfriend left him and the FBI fired him, he got a job as a profiler, which led him to Wally West.
In the beginning, Wally and Hunter were friends. However, then, an attack by Gorilla Grodd injured Hunter and Wally, as the Flash refused to use a time-traveling device to prevent the accident from ever happening. Hunter tried to steal the device himself, but there was an explosion, which resulted in Hunter becoming a speedster. Hunter, though, had skills beyond that of Wally's: not only was he super fast, he could also change the speed through which he moved in time.
Hunter became Zoom and decided to use his powers to teach Flash a lesson: he believed that Wally should suffer more tragedy in his life so that he would become a better superhero.
Will The Flash use some of this comic book origin story on the TV show, especially now that it has revealed that Hunter and Zoom are the same person? It already seems that certain elements reflect what we've seen in DC Comics.
There's also another question still left unanswered: who is Zoom's prisoner, the man in the iron mask?
The Flash returns to The CW on April 19 at 8 p.m. EDT.
