Sony is trying to get one step closer to delivering picture perfect movies.
On Tuesday, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced that its studios' 4K Ultra-HD movie-streaming service, Ultra, will debut next Monday (April 4) on Sony 4K Ultra HD televisions with Android TV in the United States.
"Consumers are rapidly upgrading their living rooms to 4K, and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's new Ultra streaming service will provide a premium viewing experience to satisfy growing demand for 4K movies and television shows," Jake Winett, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's VP of consumer services and advanced platforms, said in the company's press release.
He added: "Ultra takes advantage of the latest industry innovations — 4K resolution, high dynamic range, a wider color spectrum, digital movie extras, and UltraViolet interoperability — so viewers get the most out of their televisions and their movie collections."
Tuesday's announcement comes after Sony Electronics president Mike Fasulo initially revealed plans for Sony's televisions to include the Ultra app during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2016 in Las Vegas this past January.
Ultra intends to offer users a variety of movies for purchase and playback in 4K Ultra HD, with many such titles set to also include High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Digital Extras at no additional charge.
As examples, Sony says Ultra will offer new releases, such as Concussion, The Night Before and The Walk, with library classics such as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Ghostbusters priced at $30 in 4K with HDR. Obviously, those titles are just a few of the many that Sony could offer customers upon opening up its massive vault of movies through the years.
The Ultra 4K service is also compatible with UltraViolet, spelling the ability for users to link their Ultra profiles with their existing UltraViolet libraries and streaming their Sony Pictures content previously purchased or redeemed via other Ultra-Violet-compatible retailers.
Sony additionally says that Sony Pictures Store customers, who already own HD versions of select titles, will be able to upgrade them to 4K on Ultra for a specially-discounted price.
The Ultra 4K service is slated to impact users on Monday.
Streaming movies is about to look that much sharper for Sony users.
