Kraft recalls 7,691 cases of single slice American cheese over premature spoilage/food-borne illness concerns

Kraft Foods Group says it is recalling almost 8,000 cases of its popular single-slice American cheese product varieties because of possible spoilage concerns.

Several varieties of Kraft American Singles Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Product are being recalled because a supplier of one ingredient did not store that ingredient at the correct temperature, the company announced.

The supplier, which was not identified, "did not store an ingredient used in this product in accordance with Kraft's temperature standards," the company said in a release.

Some of the cheese may be at risk of spoilage and causing a food-borne illness, it said.

The cheese involved in the recall was produced at a company plant in Springfield, Mo., and distributed throughout the United States.

It was not distributed outside of the U.S., Kraft said.

The recall covers 12-, 16- or 24-ounce sizes of Kraft American Singles carrying a "best when used by" date of Feb. 20, 2015, or in the case of the 12-ounce size also Feb. 21.

The dates are printed on the bottom surface of the cheese packages.

Consumers can also identify packages covered by the recall because the package will carry a code starting with 0 21000 and ending with suffixes 60464 7, 61526 1 or 63360 9.

Consumers who identify any of the products in question should not consume it and should return the packages to the place of purchase for exchange or refund, Northfield, Ill.-based.

Consumer could identify the varieties and package sizes involved in the recall on its website, the company said.

It also said consumers with questions could call Kraft Foods Consumer Relations at 1-800-396-5512.

Kraft said it was making the recall voluntarily as a "precaution" and that it had received no reports of illness linked to the products.
