Spotify celebrated the NeverEnding '80s in a series of new ads for its online streaming music service. The first of the ads features two of the most unforgettable heroes from the childhood of almost every kid who grew up in that decade: Atreyu and his luckdragon, Falkor.
The two are characters from the 1984 movie "The NeverEnding Story," about a boy who reads of an epic adventure in a stolen book, which then starts to spill over into real life. The theme song for the film, titled "Never Ending Story," by Limahl, is still being streamed every day according to Spotify. And the two heroes couldn't be happier.
"I can't believe people are still listening to this song!" Atreyu tells Falkor as they soar through the clouds just like they did in the movie.
Even better, Spotify took great measures to make sure they recreated the scene faithfully more than 30 years after the movie first came out in theaters. They even brought in Noah Hathaway, who was only 12 years old when he starred in the movie, as Atreyu, and Alan Oppenheimer, who voiced the original Falkor.
According to reports, the scene was filmed in front of a green screen then spliced together with footage from the movie to create the truly nostalgic commercial.
The NeverEnding ride is one of three ads unveiled by Spotify on Monday. Check it out right here:
The ad also comes with a link to an online playlist of other music from well-known '80s artists and movies including "Ghostbusters," which has a remake featuring an all-female team coming out on July 15; "Footloose;" "Weird Science;" "Eye of The Tiger" from "Rocky;" "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" from "The Goonies" and much more.
The other two ads in the campaign feature a group of nuns rocking out after news of Pope Francis' rock album broke, and a couple preparing to move to Canada - house and all - over their anxiety of the outcome of the U.S. presidential elections.
