Ever since the first trailer of "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" was revealed, questions have surfaced regarding Doomsday being the real threat in the movie.
Subsequent trailers revealed an out-of-place scene wherein Batman is in a desert environment, fighting what appears to be Superman-loyal soldiers along with flying bug-like creatures. There was also a still image that was released which showed Batman looking over the desert with a massive Omega symbol etched in the sand.
These signs could be pointing to the looming presence of Darkseid, one of the biggest villains in the DC Universe.

Near the end of the movie, Lex Luthor warns Batman, who visits him in prison, that "the bell has been rung." Luthor further warns Batman that "he's coming," ominously referring to a greater power that will be coming from outer space.
Luthor is most likely referring to Darkseid, the dictator of the world known as Apokolips who is looking to rule all of existence. Connections to the villain can already be made with the earlier trailers of the movie, as the flying creatures highly resemble Darkseid's minions named the Parademons, and the Omega symbol in the sand is the same symbol that Darkseid uses.
Darkseid's strength is matched only by Superman's, but unlike Doomsday, he is far more intelligent. Darkseid is also capable of increasing his physical size, while also possessing the abilities of flight, super speed, telekinesis and telepathy.
Darkseid's main ability are his Omega Beams, which are powerful beams of energy that can resurrect the dead. This makes his armies almost impossible to defeat, as he relentlessly pursues what is called the Anti-Life Equation. Once Darkseid achieves this, he will be able to rule the universe by robbing all beings of their free will.
Darkseid may not have been mentioned by name in the movie, but all the signs point to the powerful being playing a role in the DC Cinematic Universe. The Marvel Cinematic Universe did the same thing for Thanos, hinting at his involvement over several movies and now tagged as the villain to beat in the two-part "Avengers: Infinity War." Most likely, Darkseid will be the main villain in "Justice League," set to be released in November 2017, and is the reason for Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Cyborg and Aquaman joining forces.
