Verizon DROID RAZR M gets re-release as Motorola Luge in prepaid smartphone lineup

Verizon has launched a new Motorola smartphone as a contract-free prepaid smartphone. The Motorola Luge is actually the RAZR M rebranded for prepaid customers and is on sale now for $199.99.

In 2004, when smartphones were a niche market and consumers were all about stylish-looking flip phones, Motorola introduced the Motorola RAZR, which was the first of a new series of high-end and ultra-thin cellular flip phones. The handsets were extremely popular and a major success for Motorola. The original RAZR V3 was crafted out of an aluminum case and had the thinnest profile of any clamshell phone at the time. Motorola also adopted the industry standard mini USB port that was used to charge the device, transfer data, and use headphones.

Motorola lowered the price of the RAZR within a year, which boosted sales, and the company sold over 50 million devices by 2006. The success of the RAZR series began to diminish when Motorola began to oversaturate the market by releasing RAZR variants at all different price points. The company and Verizon launched the first Android-based RAZR in 2011 and, like its flip phone cousin, its main highlight was its 7.1 mm thick body. Although, a rear bump at the top of the handset where its camera was placed made part of the smartphone 11.1 mm thick. Verizon and Motorola have since released multiple RAZR smartphones and now, Verizon is offering its current DROID RAZR M as part of its smartphone prepaid lineup.

The Verizon Motorola Luge is the same smartphone as the Verizon Motorola DROID RAZR M. Verizon has highlighted some of the smartphone's notable features when it comes to the handset's battery life.

The Verizon Motorola Luge features a 4.3-inch 960 x 540 edge to edge Super AMOLED display and ships with Android 4.4.2 KitKat. It is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and 1GB of RAM. Motorola has included 8 GB of internal storage and microSD expansion slot.
