They may be two of the most powerful superheroes in history, but even Batman and Superman can't stand before the might of the all-powerful movie critic. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which is set to be the foundation of the DC cinematic universe, currently holds a score of 33 percent on film review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.
Reviews are still trickling in for Zack Snyder's latest, but it doesn't look like the Tomatometer will move too much. To put in perspective how poor of a reception the film is receiving, Batman v Superman's score is currently substantially lower than that of the film's predecessor Man of Steel.
That's saying something, because Man of Steel proved to be a divisive film. Some fans loved it, some fans hated it, and a whole lot of people in between thought it was just kind of "meh." That's why the movie sits at a 56 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Needless to say, if you thought Man of Steel was bad, it looks like Batman v Superman is substantially worse.
How much worse? The incredibly unfunny Paul Blart: Mall Cop currently holds a better score than a movie about Batman and Superman fighting.
That's comparing apples to oranges. What about other poorly-received comic book films? Batman v Superman ranks only a few points above the universally-hated Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds, while Ben Affleck's lackluster Daredevil film actually ranks nearly 15 points higher at 44.
Even Batman Forever ranks nearly 10 points higher than Snyder's new film. A movie starring Jim Carrey as the Riddler and Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face soars high above Batman v Superman's current score.
So, what gives? Is Batman v Superman really as bad as critics make it out to be? Yes and no. Regardless of review scores, the movie is going to make truck-loads of money. People want to see Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman all on the same screen, even if the movie isn't that great. However, it does seem like fans are still getting a kick out of the movie, even if critics aren't.
The movie features an average 4- out of 5-star user rating, which means clearly, somebody is enjoying the gloom-filled vision of the DC universe Snyder is putting out. Still, considering the hundreds of millions of dollars Warner Bros. and DC pumped into Batman v Superman, company executives aren't going to be thrilled by these poor review scores.
