Apple sends out invite for Sept. 9 press event. What to expect

Mark your calendars for Sept. 9, as possibly the most-awaited launch for gizmo lovers now finally has an official date. Apple has sent out press invites for its "special event" slated for Sept. 9 in Cupertino, California.

True to its style, Apple's invite (on a black and white backdrop) was cryptic and read "Wish we could say more."

The Apple event will be held at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts, which is located near the company's headquarters and has a bigger seating capacity than the Yerba Buena Center (where iPhone 5 was launched) or the theater in Apple's campus. Interestingly, the Flint Center for the Performing Arts is where co-Founder Steve Jobs debuted the original Mac in 1984, which makes one conjecture that the event may have a historic importance.

Speculation is rife that the iconic company, which is synonymous with innovation, will unveil its next iteration of the best-selling iPhone at the event. The bigger seating capacity, on the other hand, suggests that Apple is planning to pull out plenty of rabbits from its hat!

Curiously enough, the Sept. 9 date is in keeping with the Apple pattern i.e. of unveiling products on a Tuesday. In 2013, Apple outed the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C around the same time on Sept. 10 (a Tuesday as well). However, in 2012, Apple has taken the wraps off the iPhone 5 on Sept. 12, which was a Wednesday, as Tuesday, Sept. 11 would have been the anniversary of the 2001 terror attacks in New York.

So what can one expect Apple to surprise us with at the Sept. 9 event? iFans can expect Apple to spring new iPhones on us that are bigger, sleeker and better. The company has been rumored to be working on two iPhone variants with 4.7-inch screen and 5.5-inch display sizes.

Apple is also anticipated to hop on to the wearables bandwagon and unveil its first-ever smartwatch -- dubbed the iWatch. The next-gen iDevices are also expected to incorporate novel software features like HealthKit and HomeKit.

Tech pundits like Ezra Gottheil of Technology Business Research anticipate something "unexpected" as the press invite's tagline seems to veer in that direction. Gottheil opines that Apple may have a bigger 13-inch plus iPad in the offing as well.

"[The tagline] hints at something unexpected," says Gottheil. "We know there will be an iPhone in two [screen] sizes, we think we know there will be an 'iWatch,' or whatever Apple calls its wearable. But there have been a lot of leaks of a larger-sized tablet. I betcha that's the unexpected."

With plenty to look forward to, all eyes will be fixed on Apple's Sept. 9 event, which is scheduled to begin at 10 AM PT.
