In a world where Joel Schumacher's second-worst Batman critical flop (out of Joel Schumacher's two Batman movies) must go up against its latest contender, Zack Snyder's much-hyped Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, how can both films possibly both come out alive? Easy: if you make a mash-up featuring the best elements of both in a YouTube video, giving the Internet a pretty good idea of what Batman v Superman would look like if it were released in the mid-'90s.
Created by ScreenCrush and edited by mash-up artist Sleepy Skunk, the re-imagined '90s-style trailer recasts Snyder's superhero battle royale as a lighter film, something along the lines of part rom-com, part buddy cop film and part Indiana Jones-like epic. Instead of using the foreboding (but excellent tones) of Batman v Superman's Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL's score, the clip subs in Batman Forever's original score composed by Elliot Goldenthal.
Highlights? More shots of Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman. And granted, Batfleck is no '90s-style Dark Knight like Val Kilmer, or George Clooney after him, but accordingly, we can pretend that Nipplegate never existed.
The trailer is even filtered in a VHS fuzziness and adorned with a "play button" circa 1995 in all its VHS glory, making it a pretty accurate rendering of what a Schumacher/Batman v Superman hybrid would look like. The Verge even called it better than Snyder's official trailer, declaring that the recut firmly held onto a "sense of spectacle and grandeur."
As ScreenCrush describes the feel of the Gotham-flavored mash-up:
"Let's just imagine traveling back to 1995 when Blockbuster Video was still a thing and renting a VHS copy of the latest movie and included on that tape was this trailer we had our pal Sleepy Skunk put together for Batman vs. Superman. It's got all the hallmarks of a retro movie trailer: the 'In a world...' voiceover, the soundtrack listing and the pan and scan format."
All in all, pretty apt.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will release in theaters nationwide on March 25.
