Apple confirms iPhone 6 event with media invites

It was just a matter of time.

Apple mailed out invitations to media outlets for the company's next big event today. The up-close image of the top of the white apple logo and the date 9/9/2014 is accompanied with the words, "Wish we could say more."

This is the event that will undoubtedly feature the final version of iOS 8 and the iPhone 6, likely in both the rumored 4.7-inch model and the 5.5-inch model. The real question is, what other devices will Apple reveal at the event? Recent reports claim that the rumored iWatch or iTime will be revealed, bringing Apple into the wearables market.

The company is holding the event at Flint Center for the Performing Arts at De Anza College in Cupertino, including building a large structure for the event that could hold a larger audience than past announcements. The fact that the Flint Center is where Steve Jobs unveiled the original Mac 30 years ago and that the company is constructing a temporary or even permanent building, seems to indicate that this event may be a bigger deal than just upgrading existing devices and adding a wearable to the lineup.

There could be more gadgets even beyond the phones and a watch at the event. An updated iPad Air and iPad Mini is possible, as well as the rumored iPad Pro with a screen that measures 12.9 inches. There may also be updates or simple tech bumps to the company's desktops and laptops. And, of course, the various iPods, standalone displays and the Apple TV media player could be refreshed.

And considering the use of the Flint Center, there is always the chance for something completely unexpected: an actual Apple-made television or a smart home hub. And with virtual reality on the cusp of becoming an actual product category in 2015, one does have to wonder if Apple would ever make a VR headset. Or perhaps something else that we can't even dream of.

We can also speculate that the tagline on the invitation could indicate an emphasis on Siri and voice controls in the iPhone 6 or the new watch. A mysterious new product could also utilize voice features.

The Apple event will take place on 9/9/2014, at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.
