Samsung aims to launch a software update to its Gear S2 wearable that will ensure the device finally offers iPhone support.
Back in December, Samsung confirmed that it was working on the possibility of pairing the Gear S2 wearable with an iPhone by creating a Gear Manager app that would be designed to work primarily with iOS devices.
SamMobile now reports that the Gear S2 could finally get that iOS support later this month.
For now, the Gear S2 pairs with Android smartphones that run 4.4 and higher, as well as those that have more than 1.5 GB of RAM. These include devices from HTC, Huawei, Lenovo, LG, Motorola, Nubia, OPPO, Pantech, Sharp, Sony, VIVO, Xiaomi, ZTE, Kyocera, Asus and, of course, the Galaxy phones from Samsung.
"Compatible with an ever-wider range of Android devices, you're done with setup in a couple of simple steps," says Samsung. "You can even leave your phone behind and step out with a streamlined version of it on your wrist."
Samsung has also powered up the Gear S2 with a growing number of amazing apps that range from delivering home security features to accessing media content. Some of these apps include Nike+ Running, ESPN, Line, Yelp for Gear, Volkswagen, Uber, Kevo by Unikey, Alipay and Voxer.
As for specs, the Gear S2 boasts a 1.2-inch super AMOLED display with a pixel resolution of 360 by 360. It's also packed with a Snapdragon 400 processor, 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB of internal storage and Samsung's proprietary Tizen OS.
The Gear S2 is also designed with a unique rotating bezel and a customizable watch face.
"It's all with a turn of the rotating bezel, where every turn is a turn for the better," said Samsung. "Switching watch faces is ever so simple. Customize it down to the last detail from the dial, the hands to the complications."
The Gear S2's iPhone support will reportedly have limited functionality compared with its Android counterparts. One of the restrictions includes Samsung Pay, to which Samsung has already given limited access for technical and security reasons.
Currently, Samsung Pay is available to users in Korea and the United States. Some of its supported devices include the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+, Galaxy S6 Active and Galaxy Note 5.
