Ever Wanted To Change The Events In Shakespeare’s 'Hamlet?' There’s A Video Game For That

William Shakespeare had a way with tragedies and "Hamlet" was one of his greatest works. If you've ever wanted to undo the events that sealed the fate of the play's characters, Elsinore is for you.

In it, you'll be playing Ophelia, a Danish noblewoman who one night woke up from her slumber plagued by a terrible vision that everyone living in Elsinore Castle will die in four days. She later on realizes that she's stuck in a time loop (think "Groundhog Day" with a looming tragedy), forced to relive those four days over and over until she's able to change the future.

Developed by Golden Glitch Studios, Elsinore is a time-looping adventure set in Shakespeare's "Hamlet." As Ophelia, players are given the challenge to prevent the tragedy that will befall Elsinore Castle.

The game will have you interacting with various characters. However, these characters follow their own schedule, bound to go through predetermined events that lead to their demise.

As players interact with the game's characters, they'll be able to gather information that can change the story and ultimately prevent the tragedy of Elsinore Castle from unfolding. Like in any game, all actions players take will have consequences, many of them unforeseen, like a character dying in a different (still horrible) way from what they were fated in the original story.

Aside from Hamlet and Ophelia, other primary characters (those who died in the original story) players will see in the game include Claudius, Hamlet's uncle; Polonius, Ophelia's father; Gertrude; Hamlet's mother and Laertes, Ophelia's brother.

Behind the game is a team made up of Katie Chironis (team lead, writer), Connor Fallon (game designer), Eric Butler (engineer), Val Reznitskaya (technical artist), Kristin Siu (engineer), Wesley Martin (artist), Duncan Boehle (engineer), Steve Green (sound designer), Becca Gray (animator), Adam Gubman (composer) and Tatiana Soutar (2D artist).

In May 27, 2015, Elsinore successfully raised $32,217 on Kickstarter, thanks to 1,163 backers. It will be available for PC, Mac and Linux and is scheduled for a Fall 2016 release.
