PlayStation Video For Android Goes Live On Google Play, But Only For A Handful Of Markets

Sony is now offering a PlayStation Video app for Android users, promising to deliver "a huge library of movies and TV shows."

While there are a slew of apps currently available on the market for video streaming, Sony is joining the party with a new app of its own. The PlayStation Video app for Android gives users full access to the trove of movies and TV shows available through the service, and customers can also rent or buy the titles without needing a subscription.

Perhaps the greatest highlight of the new PlayStation Video for Android is that it's tied into the same PlayStation store that serves the popular PS4 console, as well as the PS3, PS Vita, and Sony's web store front.

Customers who already bought movies or TV shows on their PlayStation consoles or through the web store can easily access their library through the PlayStation Video app on their mobile Android device (and vice versa).

"This app is handy if you want to stream already-purchased video content from PS Store to your Android device or purchase new movies, including Spectre, Crimson Peak and The Last Witch Hunter, and TV shows, including Arrow, The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, straight from your phone or tablet," Sony wrote on its PlayStation Blog.

It's worth pointing out, however, that the new PlayStation Video app for Android is not rolling out to all markets globally, at least not yet. For the time being, only customers in a few countries will be able to enjoy the experience.

According to Sony, PlayStation Video is now live in the UK, Australia, Germany, France, Spain and Italy. The company makes no mention of a release for customers in the United States or other markets worldwide, but a future expansion could be in the cards.

At the same time, the app is compatible with mobile devices running Android 4.4 KitKat or newer, but it's only available for Sony Xperia smartphones and tablets. The app would surely enjoy greater success if it were available for more Android devices, but for some reason Sony decided to limit it to its own ecosystem.

If you own an Xperia device, PlayStation Video for Android is now available for download as a free app from the Google Play store.
