SXSW 2016: Samsung Announces Its Own Social Network Called 'Waffle' [Video]

Samsung is always working on new projects and one of its latest ideas involves creating its very own social network. Enter "Waffle."

Taking to the SXSW 2016 conference, Samsung says Waffle is a social media platform designed to facilitate "collaborative content creation."

According to Samsung, one thing that is notably missing from the social networks currently available on the market is collaboration. With Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms, users can share details about their life and post various updates, but do so by themselves. With Waffle, it would be a joint effort.

Waffle aims to serve as a social network and mobile app that allows users to create a grid of related content posted on a sort of a shared canvas. Samsung notes that countless people are online at any given time, checking and posting on their social media accounts, but being unable to collaboratively create and publish content is a big drawback.

"[D]espite the diversity of current platforms, many share a common limitation. Namely, they only allow users to individually publish content," says Samsung. "Waffle, a new content-sharing application, hopes to change that. Boasting a user interface that resembles the grids on a waffle (hence the name), the app enables users to create a new feed of expandable content. They can also add to existing related content, as if contributing to a communal graffiti wall."

If someone posts a photo, for instance, others could add doodles, other related images, quotes and so on. Samsung sees this as a great way to generate different points of views, neatly expressed in an intriguing collaborative story.

Joseph Kim, Samsung's Creative Leader for the Waffle project, explains that this new social network would allow users to add their own input and point of view to someone else's story, and vice versa.

The grids could be infinite, so one story could expand in any direction. It remains unclear, however, just what privacy policies Samsung would implement for its Waffle network. Letting other users contribute to your story could be a gateway to a world of trolling, offensive remarks or inappropriate photos and doodles, and some clear regulations should be in place to ensure that doesn't happen.

For now, Waffle is still in development and it may not even make it to market in the end. It's an intriguing project nonetheless, and it will be interesting to see how it unfolds.
