Love it or hate it, the costume on Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad was carefully thought out.
Actress Margot Robbie, who plays the Crown Princess in the film, recently spoke about how the costume designers eventually decided upon the character's look, as well as how they even considered Harley's traditional red and black jester's outfit.
"We tried on every variation of the costume. I cannot emphasize enough how many outfits, and how many variations of the Harley Quinn costume we tried," said Robbie to HelloGiggles. "We tried the court jester costume, we tried the corset and skirt, we tried leather pants, we tried literally every type of costume possible for her. I really love where we ended up. And who knows, maybe in the sequels we'll go with the court jester one. I think there's a world of possibilities."
Although the traditional Harley costume is probably one of the most iconic, in the end, it sounds like the costume department wanted a Harley that seemed more of our world, rather than the comic book and animated worlds with which we're already familiar. That could also explain Jared Leto's Joker look, which takes inspiration from other versions of the character but modernizes it.
Throughout her long history, Harley has worn a variety of outfits, including shorts, skirts, leggings, tutus and everything in between. Her colors have gone from red and black to red and blue, the latter color scheme being the one chosen for the Suicide Squad film, which makes sense as these are the colors Harley wears in the Suicide Squad comic books.
The character has also undergone a major transformation in the comic books: she started out as a love interest for Joker, but has since moved past him and started her own life.
Rumors about Suicide Squad hint that the movie might delve into Harley's origin story. In DC Comics, Harley began life as Dr. Harleen Quinzel: screen caps from the film show Harley as a doctor chatting it up with Joker. The trailer also focuses heavily on the character, suggesting her importance to the overall movie.
Suicide Squad opens in theaters on August 5, 2016.
