Smartphone fans with handsets running on Windows Phone 8.1 may get Windows 10 Mobile on March 7, hints Vodafone Italy.
Microsoft launched the Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL and the Lumia 550 in October 2015 and released the devices in November. These devices are the first to come running on Windows 10 Mobile. Other Windows-powered devices are still to get a software release.
According to Vodafone Italy, a number of Microsoft Lumia mobile phones including Lumia 535, Nokia Lumia 635, Nokia Lumia 735, Nokia Lumia 830, Nokia Lumia 930 and Nokia Lumia 1520 will start receiving Windows 10 Mobile from March 7 onwards.
Several rumors had surfaced that Microsoft will roll out Windows 10 Mobile to select Windows devices in 2015. Even Microsoft confirmed via Facebook that some devices will get Windows 10 in December 2015 but none of the Lumia smartphones received any software update.
"Windows 10 on other devices, including mobile phones, will begin rolling out in December," said Microsoft.
In October 2015, Microsoft also confirmed that the company is working with operators to push Windows 10 Mobile to Windows Phone users.
"Microsoft is working closely with mobile operators to leverage their testing and our flighting to meet and exceed current quality bars. We will use their input but will decide when to send the updates out based on input form Mobile Operators and our Windows Insiders," said Microsoft.
In November 2015, a Microsoft spokesperson also announced that Windows 10 Mobile will be released in early 2016.
"The Windows 10 Mobile upgrade will begin rolling out early next year to select existing Windows 8 and 8.1 phones," said a Microsoft spokesperson.
However, till date Microsoft has not rolled out Windows 10 Mobile to any of Windows-powered devices. The company has not even confirmed a release date for the new operating system.
Apart from Microsoft Lumia phones, there are many other handsets from companies such as Samsung, HTC, Huawei and more that run on Windows Phone 8.1. Once Lumia devices receive Windows 10 Mobile, Microsoft may roll out update for other Windows handsets soon.
Windows 10 Mobile brings a number of new features such as a fresh browser called Microsoft Edge, which boosts performance and productivity in comparison to Internet Explorer. Customers also get an improved user interface and a new keyboard that will enhance overall usage experience of the device. Customers will be hoping to get the new operating system as soon as possible on their phones.
Vodafone Italy has confirmed the roll out of Windows 10 Mobile to select Lumia mobile phones. But it remains to be been seen if other markets also get the software update at the same time.
