Vivo, the ambitious Chinese mobile manufacturer, added another title to its belt: the company rolled out the Vivo Xplay 5 Elite, the first handset that carries 6 GB of RAM.
During the same event, the OEM also released a more affordable version of the phone, the Vivo Xplay 5, which packs 4 GB of RAM.
Vivo Xplay 5 Elite is a dual-SIM flagship that features premium build qualities: its chassis is made of metal and the screen is protected by a Gorilla Glass 4 protection layer. The phone resembles Samsung's flagship line of double-curved displays.
Xplay 5 Elite holsters a Super Amoled screen of 5.43-inch that displays 1,440 x 2,560p resolution, and its graphics come to life thanks to an Adreno 530 GPU.
The processing power relies on a four-cored Snapdragon 820 SoC, which runs at 2.15GHz and is backed by the aforementioned 6 GB RAM.
Looking at the optics of the handset, the Xplay 5 Elite confirms rumors that hinted at a strong camera-combo. On the rear of the device we find a 16-megapixel main camera that makes use of the IMX298 sensor from Sony. It comes loaded with 6P Lens, phase detection autofocus (PDAF), dual-tone LED flash and f/2.0 aperture. For selfie enthusiasts, there is an 8-megapixel front-facing snapper just waiting to see you pout.
Connectivity-wise, the Xplay 5 Elite plays well with 4G LTE networks (including bands from India) and has Bluetooth v4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac and Hi-Fi 3.0. Additional features include the self-implied GPS sensor and a micro-USB slot (equipped with OTG).
Its internal storage cannot be expanded, but at 128 GB we see little reason to.
As fitted for a flagship device, the phone also has a fingerprint sensor. What is more, the Xplay 5 Elite is packed with various other sensors, such as ambient light, gravity, gyroscope and proximity.
Both the premium and the standard Xplay 5 models can deliver split-screen multitasking functionality.
A hefty 3,600 mAh battery keeps the device running for extended periods of time.
The Xplay 5 Elite weighs 167.8 grams (5.92 ounces) and measures 153.5 x 76.2 x 7.59mm (6.04 x 3 x 0.29 in).
The device runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow, which lands with the Funtouch OS 2.6 skin embedded. Chinese vendors will start selling the smartphone on March 8, and the announced price point is of CNY 4,288 ($655).
The slightly more affordable version, the Vivo Xplay 5, requires you to shell out $565.
Whereas the top variant of Vivo's handset features Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the Xplay 5 only packs Android 5.1 Lollipop. It also comes with a Funtouch OS, model 2.5.1 skin.
The more affordable Xplay 5 shares a number of features with its bigger brother. These include the dual curved QHD display, the optics-combo, the fingerprint sensor, the connectivity options, the battery and the inbuilt 128 GB storage of the Xplay 5 Elite.
The processing power is a tad slower and it relies on an eight-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 SoC clocked at 1.8GHz. It is backed by 4 GB RAM. The graphics rely on an Adreno 510 GPU.
Looking at the physical measurements, the Xplay 5 has 153.5 x 76.2 x 7.59 mm (6.04 x 3 x 0.29 in) and weighs 167.8 grams (5.92 ounces).
It is not yet knows if or when the handsets will be available for purchase outside China, but it's nonetheless exciting to meet the world's first smartphone with 6 GB of RAM.
