Back in the days before the Internet, before many video game secrets became common knowledge, players had to spend hours (and a whole lot of quarters) experimenting to discover cheat codes and secrets in their favorite games.
Mortal Kombat has always been a great example of this. The original arcade games were filled with hidden fatalities, secret characters and more, just waiting for players who put in the time and effort to discover.
Now, more than 20 years after the release of the arcade versions of Mortal Kombat 1, 2 and 3, players have discovered a previously-unknown secret menu that exists in all three games. The find originally happened back in October, but the operator of YourMKArcadeSource has recreated it in a recent video that is still fascinating to watch.
It's called the "EJB Menu," which is presumably named after Mortal Kombat creator Ed J. Boon. Players must input a very specific series of button commands to access it, and each game's code is different. It involves pressing the block button multiple times and alternating between doing it for player one and player two.
Once inside, there is a plethora of secrets to discover. In Mortal Kombat 1 and 2, accessing the menu, lets players watch all of the character endings, input initials directly into the game's leaderboard, run debug tests and more.
There is even more to do in Mortal Kombat 3's version of the menu. In that version of the EJB Menu, players can watch all of the game's fatalities as well as play a super-difficult version of the arcade classic Galaga.
So far, it isn't known if this secret menu is accessible in console versions of the three games. Considering the EJB menu has a number of arcade specific functions, we're guessing the answer is no, though one commenter on the YouTube video says it does work in Midway Arcade Treasures 2, which features a number of classic Midway games alongside Mortal Kombat. Regardless, the fact that players are still discovering secrets in these games more than 20 years later is crazy. You can watch a demo of the secret menu below.
