Ubisoft possibly has another smash hit open-world multiplayer title in its kitty as the beta for Tom Clancy's The Division has just concluded, creating a new record thanks to 6.4 million gamers engaging in the shooter.
On Monday, Ubisoft announced the impressive figures for the new IP that is under the Tom Clancy umbrella.
"Today, The Division Beta ended and we're proud to share that more than 6.4 million of you explored the pandemic-stricken streets of New York City, making it the biggest beta ever for a new game brand on current generation platforms," revealed the Division Dev team.
The developer also thanked all those who joined in the beta and hoped that they would purchase the game when it hits the shelves next month.
Interestingly, the Destiny beta in summer 2014, attracted 4.6 million gamers by comparison. This figure is inclusive of PS3 and Xbox 360. At the time, publisher Activision had let on that it was the biggest beta around for a new IP.
The open beta for The Division went live on Feb. 18 for Xbox One users, followed by PC and PS4 a day later. The beta concluded on Monday morning on all the gaming platforms.
Ubisoft has disclosed that gamers spent nearly 5 hours on the game. The most popular area with the gamers was The Dark Zone, where players clocked nearly 2 hours in its PVP zone. Nearly 50 percent of the players turned "rogue," which basically means that they killed other friendly players.
Additionally, the gamers were successful in extracting over 63 million items from the Dark Zone.
The release of the game is slated for March 8 and the publisher is optimistic that The Division could potentially join the ranks of titles such as Assassin's Creed, Destiny and Watch Dogs, becoming one the biggest new IP launches around.
The 6.4 million figure is encouraging for the game and translates to great sales prospects. The notion behind a beta is that it will aid developers in seeking out bugs and other issues prior to the game's official release. Seemingly, the betas are also often used by publishers as glorified demos and a marketing asset as they help generate interest for the impending game.
The free game gives players a peek into what to expect from the title, potentially hooking them on so that they purchase the product when it releases.
Tom Clancy's The Division will be released for Xbox One, PS4 and PC on March 8.
