Every year, spring training gives baseball fans a chance to get closer to their favorite team and players in a more intimate and interactive setting than experienced at Major League ballparks.
But one Chicago Cubs' fan got way more interaction from a player than he bargained for.
That's because Cubs left fielder Kyle Schwarber smashed his windshield with a home run ball, leaving the fan to take a photo of the damage and post it on his Instagram account, in a picture and story that's going viral at the onset of the 2016 Major League Baseball season.
"Our car is now famous," Peter Gesler's Instagram post read. "Kyle Schwarber's home run in batting practice found our windshield. Everyone took pictures and laughed at the idiot who parked there. I did the same."
He was even more awestruck when the picture he snapped wound up being on ESPN's SportsCenter, paving the way for him to jump back on his Instagram and comment.
"Wow. Never thought my IG post to my, at the time, 100 followers would end up on SportsCenter," he added. "Crazy."
While the Cubs' IG account simply posted "oops" in response to Gesler's smashed windshield, Schwarber took it a bit further, using the moment to help the fan out.
The left fielder tweeted an auto glass company, Safelite, to see if it could help repair Gesler's smashed windshield.
Safelite's response?
"We can absolutely help him out!" the company replied, probably not minding the free promotion and thousands of extra eyes learning about their business in the process. "Should we be ready to fix more outside the park tomorrow?"
About that latter part, there might be some truth in the jest. The 22-year-old Cubs player is coming off a 2015 rookie campaign, which has seen him bat .246 with 16 home runs and 43 RBIs ... and he already has one broken windshield to his name this spring training.
So, it doesn't appear that he's going to face any sophomore slump. Sophomore hijinx is more like it.
Hey, Cubs' fans — park at the deep end of the parking lot for the rest of spring training, will you?
At least, Gesler can laugh off the cracked windshield now.
