A whole generation was re-introduced the “The Joy of Painting” with the soft-spoken nature of Bob Ross when Twitch.TV aired a marathon of all the episodes in the series in last year. With a few techniques, Ross put on canvas amazing landscapes inspired by the breathtaking beauty of the Alaskan landscape. Also putting the beauty of the Alaskan wilderness into the spotlight is Academy Award nominated movie “The Revenant.” But perhaps not so joyfully.
In “The Revenant,” Leonardo DiCaprio portrays a fictionalized version of Hugh Glass, a tracker who survived a grizzly bear attack and somehow makes his way back to civilization and seek revenge on the man who murdered his son and left him dead. A parody video by Above Average on YouTube that combines Bob Ross' soft-spoken nature with some of the more gory scenes from the movie has gone viral.
Frank Garcia-Hejl impersonates Bob Ross, complete with his signature 'fro and gentle voice. He introduces the show by explaining that we'll be painting a “tranquil little scene.” However, a group of trappers are in the distance. But, “to heck with it,” he'll just paint them in as well. After all, “you just want to paint whatever nature puts in front of you,” – whatever that may be.
If you've seen the movie for which DiCaprio is said will finally earn him an Academy Award, you'll know that aside from a lot of Titanium White, you'll also need a lot of red, Crimson Bloody Red, in order to paint any scene from “The Revenant.”
Sure enough, the happy little trappers and the faux 'froed Ross in the midst of the evergreens meet the two bear cubs and their angry mama bear.
Ross is visibly disturbed by how the nature scene unfolds in front of him but the show, and the painting, must go on! It's just “stuff that happens in nature” so load up your palette with as much red paint as you can and keep going.
The video goes on with Ross with his well-known instruction to “tap, tap, tap,” the brush onto the canvas to paint the scene of Tom Hardy's character, John Fitzgerald, smothering Glass's son to prevent him from screaming for help. Ross is not going to interfere himself because it's all part of the nature scene that he's just going to paint.
And don't forget to sign your art when you've finished painting!
