Lovers of From Software's Dark Souls series have a lot to look forward to in the coming months, namely the upcoming release of Dark Souls 3. Now fans of the franchise playing on Xbox One have yet another reason to get excited: the original game is soon becoming backwards compatible.
Via Kotaku, an Australian digital preorder listing for Dark Souls 3 states that those who digitally preorder the game will receive a digital code for the first Dark Souls within 7 to 10 days. That means players who preorder Dark Souls 3 will be able to relive the horror of the original game in anticipation of the upcoming threequel.
As for those who already own a copy of Dark Souls, no word yet on when it will officially become backwards compatible for all, as Microsoft has yet to comment on the matter. In recent months Microsoft has often bundled older Xbox 360 installments of various franchises receiving new installments as a preorder incentive, with the games often going backwards compatible on the day of the new game's release. This was the case with Rainbow Six Siege (which came with Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and 2) and will be the case with Alan Wake, which will become backwards compatible with the release of Remedy's new game, Quantum Break.
If we follow this trend, fans can likely expect the first Dark Souls to become backwards compatible on or around the time of the third game's March 24 release. Once the game is backwards compatible, each game in the Dark Souls series will be playable on Xbox One. A remastered version of Dark Souls 2 that came bundled with the game's two expansions released in April 2015. A spiritual successor to Dark Souls, Bloodborne, released as a PlayStation 4 exclusive last year.
Dark Souls should prove to be a popular addition to the ever-growing list of Xbox 360 backwards-compatible games on Xbox One. People still can't get enough of the game, as is evidenced by this player who recently completed it without getting hit a single time. Other recent additions to the backwards compatibility list include LEGO: Batman and Alan Wake: American Nightmare.
