At this point, Mortal Kombat is no stranger to guest stars. What started with a single cameo in Mortal Kombat 9 quickly became a string of guest appearances in Mortal Kombat X.
Both Jason Voorhees and the Predator were featured as part of the first Kombat Pack DLC, while Leatherface and the Alien xenomorph are set to join the roster with the game's second wave of DLC.
Guest appearances are something that could go horribly wrong if not done well — thankfully, NetherRealm Studios has knocked it out of the park with each subsequent cameo. It certainly helps that each character feels like they belong in Mortal Kombat, as opposed to random characters — famous slasher villains feel right at home with NetherRealm's psychotic Kombatants.
Nowhere is that more evident than Leatherface. The hulking cannibal changed slasher movies forever — and yet, if his appearance in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre wasn't so iconic, you'd be forgiven for thinking that he was built from the ground up for Mortal Kombat. WARNING: if you're not a fan of blood and guts, you'll want to skip the following video:
In any other game, sawing someone in half from the gut up would be absolutely horrifying ... and yet, considering some of the other Fatalities in Mortal Kombat X (Ermac's comes to mind), Leatherface's finishing move is actually kind of tame. Granted, this is just the first of two Fatalities — for all we know, NetherRealm has something even more violent up its sleeve.
What's surprising is that none of the moves NetherRealm has revealed so far use a meat hook in any way — sure, it makes sense that Leatherface's debut Fatality would use a chainsaw, but what about a Brutality? That meat hook kill in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the most iconic horror moments in film history ... it just doesn't make sense for NetherRealm to skip over it.
Meat hook or not, fans will finally be able to get their hands on Leatherface soon: the second Kombat Pack for Mortal Kombat X is set to launch on March 1.
