Pottermore, the home of all things Harry Potter on the web, has revealed that the script for the upcoming Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play will officially be published in book form this summer. In other words, there’s a new Harry Potter book on the way.
The book, which is technically titled Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts I & II, is slated to come out in a Special Rehearsal Edition based on the play’s advance previews and a Definitive Collector’s Edition some time later after the play has officially opened. Advance previews are often a time where some elements of the play are still liable to change, so the two versions could likely be different.
The play itself is based on an original story by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling as well as Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, though it is credited in essentially every instance as “a new play by Jack Thorne.” It stars Jamie Parker as Harry, Noma Dumezweni as Hermione and Paul Thornley as Ron. The play is also split into two parts, like the script book indicates, though the organizers intend for it to be seen consecutively on the same day or one a day for two days.
Here’s part of the play’s synopsis, where the developments take place 19 years after the majority of the books:
While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.
The Special Rehearsal Edition will publish both in print and digitally after the play’s first official performance on July 30.
