Kids today have more than enough to keep them entertained, but back in the day, having fun meant amping up on one thing: imagination. That's what Reddit user one23abc and his brother turned to when then they were young and couldn't afford to buy popular card games like Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh!
Called Creature Cards, the game was made entirely from scratch, with the children drawing on paper various creatures with strengths depending on what they have imagined.
One of the creatures they came up with was Dyson Fafita. Named after Dyson, a vacuum cleaner brand, the creature's design was based off Troy McClure from "The Simpsons." There was so much to say about Dyson Fafita that they had to use another card to detail the special effects the creature is capable of.
There's also Zorthrax. The creature's the best card in the game because it requires a lot of cards to summon.
When asked how Creature Cards was played, the Redditor did their best to recall the game's mechanics.
"There are 3 types of card: creature, evolution and item. At the start of the game you start with 3 creatures, 1 evolution and 1 item. Play is divided into player turns."
For each turn, there are five phases: draw, item, summon, attack (or evolve) and end. Most of the item cards can only be used when the "item phase" is active, but certain items can be used against an opponent under specific conditions, much like how Yu-Gi-Oh! trap cards work.
If a player doesn't have enough MP for an attack, they can "struggle" or roll a dice. Rolling a 1 or 6 equates to 20 points of damage to the opponent, while getting a 2 or 5 will result into 10 points of damage. Roll a 3, however, and a player will incur 10 points of damage. When they get a 4, they reroll the dice.
A player can also choose to evolve a creature instead of attacking during a turn. However, for a creature to evolve, it must have attacked at least once before.
The mechanics to Creature Cards are pretty simple going from these instructions. Redditor one23abc does suggest stocking up on stones or counters though to use for MP and HP.
