Evernote Corporation is on course to restructure the company and in a bid to streamline its products and services, it is gearing up to shut down the Evernote Market.
The company launched Evernote Market in 2013 as an e-commerce platform which would retail physical lifestyle products such as notebooks, rucksacks, wallets etc. The lifestyle product store was an extension of Evernote, the popular cross-platform note-taking app.
Unfortunately, the Evernote Market failed to gain popularity with consumers. Beginning Wednesday, February 3, the company will quit making and selling its own products.
Evernote made the announcement that it was pulling the plug on the Evernote Market in a blog post on Monday, February 1, 2016. While Evernote will continue retailing some branded items such as the Moleskine notebooks, the Fujitsu scanner and the Adonit Stylus through its partners, it will shift its focus on software.
"Ultimately though, Evernote is a software company. Building and perfecting the Evernote experience is where we'll be focusing our future efforts. Instead of selling and fulfilling orders ourselves, on February 3rd, we will transition the Market to promote Evernote-integrated products made and sold by our partners at Adonit, Moleskine, and PFU. We plan to continue adding partners and integrations that strongly and elegantly complement Evernote to that list," noted John Hoye, the company's head of partnerships.
The latest announcement comes in the midst of management changes at Evernote. The startup recently bid adieu to CEO Phil Libin, which was soon followed by a layoff of 13 percent of the company's global employees. The company also limited the reach of Skitch as we reported and dropped popular add-ons such as Clearly and Pebble.
The catalyst for killing off the Evernote Market is still unknown. A strong possibility exists that the company's products - a tad expensive for accessories - did not find many takers and was thus unable to translate into revenue generators.
However, Evernote says that it sold close to 300,000 Jot Script styluses from Adonit, more than 800,000 Moleskine notebooks and 20,000 ScanSnap scanners.
The scanner and the stylus are out of stock on the online store, hinting that Evernote halted the sale of these products before its announcement. Those hankering for the Moleskine notebooks will be pleased to learn that they are still up for grabs.
Evernote's Ronda Scott revealed that products will be available on the Evernote Market till 4 pm PT on Wednesday, February 3.
