A new entry in the Silent Hill series is on the way, and this one looks like something special.
A little something has been made available on the PlayStation Store exclusively for PlayStation 4 owners. Part playable demo, part teaser trailer, it's called "P.T." Download and play it, and you'll find yourself wandering through an apartment of numerous rooms, from a first-person perspective. Each time you enter a new room, the environment changes and transforms around you, often into frightening imagery or sounds. When you finally reach the end of these rooms, you descend into the building's basement, where everything goes pitch black. An ultra creepy voiceover soon gives way to a man walking down a desolate street at night. The man turns, and you see that it's a figure bearing the digital likeness of none other than "Walking Dead" star Norman Reedus (aka the only man alive who can make greasy, unkempt hair sexy).
A title card pops up, revealing the production of a new game titled Silent Hills (the extra "s" is intentional), and Reedus is not the only famous name involved. Geek god Guillermo del Toro, director of "Hellboy," "Pan's Labyrinth" and "Pacific Rim" is working on the game in an undisclosed capacity, as is legendary Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima. This marks the first time Kojima has worked on a Silent Hill video game, and that fact alone is enough to get gamers excited. Adding del Toro and Reedus, who appears to be starring in the game, and Silent Hills shoots to the top of many gamers' "most anticipated games" lists.
It's been almost two years since the last entry in the series, a PSVita game from Konami called Silent Hill: Book of Memories. Hills is being created in the much-lauded Fox Engine, the same advanced 3D game engine that Konami's Metal Gear Solid V is being built on.
Silent Hills will be the franchise's tenth game, and will almost certainly be its most high-profile release. The (very NSFW) video below features a walkthrough of the playable teaser by Twitch user "SoapyWarpig," who offers commentary and reactions throughout. If you prefer a purer teaser, GameSomniac posted another Twitch recording without commentary here, though we noticed some audio issues with it.
