KitKat is the latest available tablet OS and Android mobile version by Google. So far, KitKat has been doing really well as it receives a steady distribution increase as far as the latest OS version is concerned.
While KitKat's presence has climbed, those devices that run past OS in Android's backyard seemed to show a decline. Android 4.0.x or Ice Cream Sandwich which had an 11.4 percent share last month dropped at 10.6 percent. Those devices that are running Gingerbread and Froyo haven't really moved much. Gingerbread has a 13.6 percent distribution while Froyo settled at 0.7 percent. Last month, Android Gingerbread (versions 2.3.3 - 2.3.7) had 13.5 percent device distribution while Android Froyo (version 2.2) had 0.7 percent device distribution. Interestingly, Android 2.3 had a slight jump from 13.5 percent to 13.6 percent which is deemed as odd.
All three Android Jelly Bean versions have managed to keep the majority share of 54.2 distribution percent. If broken down, it will show that Android version 4.1.x makes up 26.5 distribution percent of the total devices; Android version 4.2.x covers 19.8 percent; and Android version 4.3 covers 7.9 distribution percent. Last month, the combined share of the three Jelly Beans was 56.5 distribution percent.
The data had been collected within a 7-day period that ended on Aug. 12, 2014. Any Android versions that have sub 0.1 percent distribution are not included in the data.
"This data is gathered from the new Google Play Store app, which supports Android 2.2 and above, devices running older versions are not included. However, in August 2013, versions older than Android 2.2 accounted for about 1 percent of devices that checked in to Google servers," said Google.
On the other hand, KitKat is steadily growing. Speculations seemed to be forming on how the numbers will change once Android L is released publicly. When a release is deemed as a huge one, most manufacturers tend to have a change in their focus. In this case, they may turn their focus away from KitKat and put more attention on devices that will run on Android L.
There is also given information on the relative number of devices that support a certain OpenGL ES version. OpenGL version 1.1 is recorded to have a share of 0.1 percent. OpenGL version 2.0 has a leading share of 80.2 percent. OpenGL 3.0 shows a steady increase of 19.7 distribution percent. Last month, the OpenGL version 1.1 continued to have a 0.1 share percent. OpenGL version 2.0 was found to have an 83.6 share percent. Lastly, the Open GL 3.0 is recorded to have 18.2 share percent.
