Tim Armstrong, the frontman for the Berkeley-based punk rock band Rancid, is set to guest star in an upcoming episode of the newly-revived X-Files.
According to IMDB, Armstrong will make his X-Files debut in the revival's fourth episode as a character named "Trashman." While the ep's name ("Home Again"), directed and written by X-Files alumn Glen Morgan, suggests it's related to the 1996 episode "Home," it is purportedly unrelated.
Here is the official synopsis for "Home Again":
"Mulder and Scully are sent to investigate the murder of a city official, which it seems no human could have committed. Meanwhile, Scully deals with a personal tragedy, which brings up many old feelings about the child she gave away for adoption."
It isn't surprising that Armstrong, whose been Rancid's lead singer for over 20 years, has taken on the role of Trashman. Like Silicon Valley's Kumail Nanjiani, who is also making a cameo, Armstrong seems to be a fellow superfan of the '90s sci-fi pop culture touchstone.
This also isn't the singer's first crack at acting; Armstrong made his acting debut in the 1994 movie Larry is Dead, which he also directed and produced, and appeared in the 2004 movie The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things, based on the debunked memoir/novel by JT LeRoy (AKA American writer Laura Albert).
The fourth episode of the new season of The X-Files will air on Feb. 8 on Fox.
