The digital video game business is growing rapidly, and leading the charge and ahead of the pack is no other than Activision. This shouldn't come as much of a surprise seeing as the publisher is home to Call of Duty and its newest hit video game, Destiny.
According to a report by Superdata, a reasearch firm that focuses on games, the digital video game market has managed to earn over $61 billion across all major platforms. This is an 8 percent increase for 2015, and although it might seem modest, it is truly not. The holiday season also helped, thanks to several video games going on sale.
When it comes down to digital video game sales on consoles, the 34 percent growth spurt is the highest ever. Activision walked away with about $870 million in revenue from three games combined. These games are Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Black Ops 3 and Destiny.
The top earning video games on consoles are as follows:
1. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Activision, $355
2. FIFA 15, EA, $332
3. Grand Theft Auto V, Take-Two Interactive, $322
4. Destiny, Activision, $291
5. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, Activision, $224
6. FIFA 16, EA, $212
7. Fallout 4, Bethesda Softworks, $108
8. Star Wars Battlefront, EA, $106
9. Madden NFL 16, EA, $76
10. Madden NFL 15, EA, $73
As gaming moves toward the digital age of video games, the console market is lagging behind as the smallest. This is not surprising since some console gamers have the reputation to be not as accepting of the digital revolution. Furthermore, while digital games have been available on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, it was only taken seriously with the launch of the new devices.
Before, new games were launched first on physical copies, and then made available months later for digital download. These days, however, games are released on disc and digitally at the same time. With this now being the case, we expect digital downloads to further increase this year.
